Your Closet Called - All White Everything!

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

As ironic as it may seem, on the contrasting end of this Spring's "Prints Galore" trend is the also popular trend of wearing "All White".

Personally, wearing all white (or almost all white) is a warm-weather essential for me. Although I love colors, I equally love my whites and how they exude a feminine and chic vibe.  There's nothing like the sleek and sexy look of a white tank and skinnies (as seen on Mel B in the pic below), an all white suit (as seen on Elle MacPherson) or long, high-waisted trousers and a starched button-up tailored shirt with bold accessories! These looks speak instant polish if worn properly.  **BTW, Love Kim K's look below, minus the floppy hat.

Tips to remember when wearing white:
  • Avoid wearing wrinkled white (of course unless it's meant to be crinkled). This is never a good look.
  • Avoid public transportation, where unavoidable fashion casualties can occur. Think of the little kid with the chocolate candy bar!
  • Try to keep make-up at a minimum to avoid smudges and accidental transfers to your outfit.
  • Don't order red wine! Seriously, this might be the worse thing to ever happen to a white suit!  A red wine spill on an all white outfit = Yikes!
  • Take your whites to the cleaners to be cleaned and for a thorough press job.  Whites can be prone to "yellowing" if not handled properly.
  • Tailor, tailor and tailor again.  Make sure your white fits right in all the right places. A sagging, ill-fitting white suit or outfit is a big No, No!
  • Last, but not least, keep a stain stick available to treat stains immediately if they occur.
Simply put, the key to wearing white is to keep it SIMPLE!

Blogging While Busy:: Time Managment

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Like many of you I work full-time and like to enjoy life while maintaining a blog that I hope will one day create opportunities for me but the day to day life sometimes gets in the way of time I need to dedicate to adding content to the blog.

As I discussed in my Editorial Calendar post, it's extremely important to stay organized and create a little wiggle room when you need to make changes or need a break from the sometimes overwhelming world of blogging. By now I'm sure you've mastered working your editorial calendar so here are a few tips to help you better manage your time and stay on track.

Managing your time::
  • Plan: Set designated writing times and dates, this can change when necessary BUT creating a habit is imperative. Use an egg timer or stop watch to help keep you on track with your posts, give yourself 30min to complete simple posts and 45min to an hour for more detailed posts.
  • Set the Stage: Uploading and editing photos can take forever! Once you know what your posts are going to be for the days ahead use your designated editing day to upload and edit your pictures. Save them in the appropriate file folders and you can even drop the pictures into your post template so when you're ready all you have to do is add content.
  • Log-Off: I hate to say it, but there has to be some point in your day when you have to disconnect from Email,Twitter,Facebook,Tumblr and Pinterest. While engaging in Social Media is important,you have to have rich content in order to remain successful. You'll be surprised at how refreshed you'll be and original ideas come to mind when you take a moment to step away from current events and place that energy into your writing.
  • Clean-Up:  Set up a clean workspace free of clutter, this not only helps your creativity flow but you won't waste valuable time looking for documents/notes. This also applies to your electronic workspace...dump files and items you no longer need.
  • Schedule your Posts: One of the best features in Blogger,Wordpress and Tumblr is the ability to schedule posts. On days when I have some spare time I'll draft a post days ahead of time and schedule it to post at a specific time. This feature allows you work in advance and there's noting better than getting work out of the way.
  • Download Apps: Take full advantage of your smartphone, you can blog on the go and what's better than that? This is where "Setting the stage" comes in handy. Say a block in your schedule opened up and you're away from your computer...no sweat...you've already set your pictures in the template now just add content and post from your phone.
How do you best manage your time?

Hair Removal Made Easy:: Gillette Venus&Olay Razor

Monday, March 26, 2012

I've never enjoyed shaving and I have to admit that when I got the Gillette Venus&Olay Razor in the mail (thanks to the wonderful folks at Influenster
and the Love Vox Box ) I was skeptical that this would be the one razor would change my mind. Shaving ALWAYS leaves my skin dry and on occasion I end up with ingrown hairs so I typically wax or use cremes to remove my unwanted body hair. To my great surprise shaving with the Gillette Venus&Olay Razor left my skin hydrated and I haven't experienced any irritation since using the razor last week.

What makes this razor so different?
  • Olay Moisture Bars work to lock-in moisture to your skin
  • The 5 Venus Blades provide a close shave so you won't need to shave as often
  • Built in Olay Moisture Bars create a lather that allow you to skip the shaving cream should you choose to do so
You can pick up the Gillette Venus&Olay Razor by visiting the Gillette website or at your local drugstore at the great price of $10.99.

What are your hair removal techniques?

Ro's Natural Hair journey:: Finally, Products I LOVE!!

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

The product struggle has been REAL for me...since chopping my relaxed hair in October, I've spent the last few months searching for an ideal set of products that help to manage my super tight curls and I think I've finally found the right combination. After getting some color (to me color made all the difference) and allowing growth I finally felt it was time to ditch the wig and rock my natural tresses (publicly)!

As promised in my product review for Curls Unleashed Curl Defining Creme I styled my hair using this amazing custard like creme that really helps to manage my curls like no other product has. Check out the results of my finger coils below.

To achieve the style and shine, I used the Curl Defining Creme and Matrix BIOLAGE Color Care Shine Shake.

What it does:
  • Retains tone with a low pH formula to help seal the cuticle
  • Maintains color's depth with UV Fade Filter
  • Illuminates shine with porosity smoothers
  • Provides all-day conditioning
  • Perfect for all hair types that are color-treated
  • Paraben and synthetic dye-free
My Results
I applied the Color Care Shine Shine after towel drying my hair and at first I was a bit nervous because the creamy white colored spray sat on top of my hair. The concern was that due the thickness of the spray I might experience build-up and/or flaking BUT to my great surprise I haven't seen one flake since applying it to my hair. Not only does this product maintain the life of my color, its paraben free which is excellent for my natural hair. I like that the shake can be used wet or dry and the lasting shine is amazing.
If you opt to color your hair you'll definitely want to invest in the Matrix Color Care system to keep your color looking vibrant and your hair healthy.

I'm so thrilled that I'm finally getting this natural hair styling/care thing down!

What are some of you favorite natural hair products?

Spring Fashion '12::Printed Wedges are all the Rage!

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

 I'm over the moon about this upcoming Spring/Summer season's trends, especially the colorful prints! You can practically find prints in everything ranging from jackets to handbags to shoes and the wedge sandals are leading the pack in the printed shoe department.  Being a little height challenged, I love any shoe that will add inches to my height, so I've already decided to make room for a few pairs of these wedge sandals this upcoming season.

Many of the season's prints are quite exciting and come in a wide selection of floral, aztec prints, and animal prints just to name a few!  These prints can be easily paired up with a solid bright or neon maxidress and an over-the-top summer totebag.  And if you're really great with prints, and like to live on fashion's edge, combine several prints and go about your merry way!  Whatever the case, get with the program and be sure to pick you up some prints this Spring!
Check out a few printed wedge sandals on my radar and as you can see, they fall into a price range to fit all budgets!

LOTW:: MAC Ruby Woo

Friday, March 16, 2012

I have tons of lipstick...so much that I rarely remember what I have in my stash nor do I get a chance to wear it all. With that said, I'll be doing a LOTW post (Lip Of The Week) so I can finally start using all these great lipsticks.

Week One::
I'm rocking the beloved Ruby Woo by MAC Cosmetics paired with the MAC Vino lip liner. Surprisingly enough I wasn't always in love with this color, it's just grown on me within the last few months.

I think this is definitely in my top 10!

Be sure to stop by next week for my new color,

Blogging While Busy:: Editorial Calendars

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Photo Credit
  Let's face it, life has a way of sometimes getting us off track especially when it comes to the hectic blogging  lifestyle. I work full-time, write for 2 other publications and I have social life and relationship to maintain so for me, I had to incorporate a method that would help keep me organized and on top of all of my posting history.

My personality mandates that I have structure and organization so it was only natural that I put my own spin on the Editorial Calendar. Editorial Calendars are a must if you are serious and dedicated to your craft as a writer. For some of us (bloggers) our blogs have morphed into lives of their own and demand fresh content and ample time. Personally, I hope to position my blog as beauty/lifestyle resource and in order to do that I'll have to learn how to generate original content and stick to timelines. Beauty editors at major publications aren't going to care if I'm sleepy,sick or fresh out of ideas thus the Editorial Calendar helps to create discipline and habit which is a definite in this thing called blogging.

Dissecting MY Editorial Calendar:
Screen shot of a portion of my Editorial Calendar
As you can see, I don't use a traditional calendar, rather I use a spreadsheet because the sort, find and organize features are like heaven to me.

Sections::
  • Ideas- when an idea hits me, I go in and add the idea so that I don't forget. You'll note that some of my ideas have my themes, this helps me to sort by theme and identify topics that I've already covered.
  • Title- Sometime there is an idea and the title takes longer to pop in your head. You won't ever have to worry about duplicate titles with the find feature offered in excel.
  • Status-Sometimes I input ideas and forget to follow up or research so this column helps me determine if my idea has gone from idea to reality. It's kind of like crossing off my To Do list.
  • Due Date: This section really helps to keep me accountable and get content out in a timely manner.
  • Date Posted: Listing the date is great because I can sort (I really love features in Excel) and determine how I need to schedule feature posts. By comparing my due date and posted date it lets me know if I'm overloading myself or just being a slacker.
  • Notes: Pretty simple to figure out...I'll note if the post generated hits that exceed the norm or if I PR company sponsored a post or it's a Press Release.
Helpful Hints::
  1. Maximize your Smart Phone: I downloaded the Google Docs application so that anytime I have an idea I can go right in and add to my calendar/spreadsheet.
  2. Color Coding- If you note in my screen shot I use different colors to serve as a "key." As soon as I open the document I know Yellow is a pending post which is important and Red indicates that the post is extremely urgent, thus it gets my attention first.
  3. Flexibility- Don't overwhelm yourself...allow days off and BREATHE!! You have a dedicated audience and as long as you engage them with great posts and fresh content, they'll understand that everyone needs a day off. Besides, taking a break can give you new perspective. Also, keep in mind things like events and award shows that may cause some due dates to change beyond your control.
Thanks to Blog Trends for hosting such a great discussion about Editorial Calendars on Twitter Monday night.

What are your tools for managing your Editorial Calendar?

Ro's Raving About:: LancĂ´me Rouge In Love

 I've never been a huge fan of LancĂ´me's lipsticks, (the reds never looked great on me and some other colors never caught my eye) although they have a stellar reputation for being long-lasting and well pigmented. Then came the Rouge In Love Collection this spring and I'm head-over-hills about the colors and their long lasting abilities.

Violet Coquette
The color that first stood out to me was Violette Coquette because I love anything purple and the colors seemed so outside of the (what I view as) LancĂ´me's conservative box.

The Details:
 The vibrant colors last up to 6 hours (This color lasts literally all day,I reapply only once during an 8hr work shift) and keep your lip moisturized throughout the day.

Colors are categorized into Moods::

  • Jolis Matins: Fresh shades for daytime wear. Jolis Matins shades are identified with the letter M in the shade number.
  • Boudoir Time: Pop shades for cocktail hour. Bourdoir Time shades are identified with the letter B in the shade number.
  • Tonight is My Night: Intense shades for magical nights. Tonight is My Night shades are identified with the letter N in the shade number.
If you love vibrant colors and want a long-lasting lipstick, you'll definitely want to pick up some colors in the Rouge In Love Collection, it's well worth the $25 investment.

Product Review:: Carols Daugher Acai Cleanser and Toner

When most people think of Carols Daughter the automatic thought is Hair but some may be surprised to know that the line popular natural hair brand offers a skin care line. While the line isn't developed beyond cleansers, toners and moisturizing cremes it has a loyal fan base.

Since I'm obsessed with great skin and almost always willing to try new products I decided to give the newly formulated Acai Hydrating Foam Cleanser and Hydrating Exfoliating Toner a try.

The Details::
Both the Hydrating Foam Cleanser and Hydrating Exfoliating Cleanser are enriched with Acai which is an antioxidant the helps to revitalize and keep the skin looking youthful. The product also includes Ylang-Ylang which helps soothe the skin and prevents irritation. The toner helps to rid your skin of dead skin cells using Meadowsweet and while the hydrating line does just that, your skin won't be feeling greasy.

Did I love it?
Yes!! The Acai Hydrating Foam Cleanser, once rubbed into the skin became creamy and moisturizing leaving my skin feeling well hydrated and soft. After cleansing, I used the Acai Hydrating Exfoliating Cleanser which was absolutely excellent! Perhaps I was most surprised that the toner didn't irritate my skin like some others do directly after cleansing. Overall my skin felt refreshed and appeared vibrant and well hydrated.
If you're in the market for a new cleanser this is a line that you'll definitely want give a try.

Ro Recommendation: Yes
The Good: Paraben Free, Smells Great, Moisturizes
The Bad: None
Price: Cleanser- $20 Toner- $19

Going Natural:: 5 things to consider before you Big Chop

Monday, March 12, 2012

Photo Credit

After my Big Chop, 2010
      Everywhere we look sistah's are rocking their natural tresses. While some in the fashion world view it as a trend (and it could very well be) I strongly disagree.  I refuse to believe that women are wearing their crowning glory because it's the NEW and LATEST trend. Going natural for me was all about no longer being a slave to my own hair, I wanted the freedom to be who I am without apology. This is my 4th and last time going natural ,and I've decided there is no way that I will wear a relaxer again.  The reason why this is my 4th time is because as a hairstylist I like to experiment with different looks and at the time I felt like I could not achieve certain styles without a relaxer, but now I know better. Let's be clear I am not against relaxers, the choice is up to you.  I know for me natural is the way to be.

If you're considering going "natural" there are a few things that you might want to consider before bidding farewell to chemical processing.

Want to go "natural" consider this::
  • Are you going to Big Chop or Transition(cut it off/grow it out while clipping the relaxed ends once a month and still maintaing a relaxed look/rollerset/flatiron/braids). This decision will impact your daily style and routine so be sure to give it some consideration.
  •  Are you willing to commit hair care regimen that helps keep your hair healthy?
  •  Find a hairstylist that is knowledgeable and experienced in natural hair care. Don't just assume...you'll want to ask questions and do a consult.
  •  Finding perfect products may take lots of trial and error. It may take a couple of test runs when it comes to products. What may work for one person may not work for you. *I'll be doing some product reviews soon*
  • Embrace your texture, play with products and styles and most importantly have fun! Learn to love what you see in the mirror, see yourself as the standard of beauty.
What's your natural hair story? We'd love to hear it!

Product Review:: glo•Minerals Inspirational Lights Candle

There's nothing better than sitting down to blog in a peaceful environment that's clutter free and comfortable. Often times when I get ready to write I burn some candles or oils to help get me in a calm state of mind so my thoughts can flow. With that said, you can imagine how happy I was to receive the Inspirational Lights Candles from glo•Minerals. I have yet to find a single product of theirs that I don't instantly fall in love with and as soon as I smelled the candles in "Honey Sugar Butter" and "Cheer" I knew I'd found a new favorite candle.

The Details::
Inspirational Lights Candle deliver and unforgettable fragrance with blended essential oils that create a calm and soothing environment. The soy paraffin wax burns clean for up to 50 hours.

Why I love these candles::
As soon as I picked up the beautifully decorated box I could smell the tantalizing aroma right away. In addition to the great smell, the candles burn clean (no black smudge) due to the soy paraffin wax that the candles are made with and the fragrance almost instantly fills the air.

The simple yet well stated box includes a greeting card that you can write a personalized message on and  includes a quote from Buddha::
     "Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared." Buddha

If you like candles and a wonderful smelling house these are definitely candles you'll want to try out.
