Ro's Natural Hair Journey:: My Natural Hair Meltdown

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

I've been natural almost a year now and I won't say the process has been a walk in the park but it's been pretty easy. Getting see my true texture and natural curl pattern has at times astonished me and made me wonder how I was ever so dependent on the "creamy crack."

For the most part my twist outs, bantu knots and finger coils always come out flawlessly. I work my coils into a cute style and keep it moving....UNTIL this week happened. It's like my hair tapped me on the shoulder and said "yo Ro, it's been a cool journey and all but uh, I quit."

Now I probably won't go as far as a 2nd Big Chop (I'm a drama princess) but my hair just won't cooperate.

Why the meltdown?

  • Shrinkage: a.k.a. Public Enemy #1
  • Length: While my hair has grown like crazy it's at a place where it's too long for some styles and too short for others.
  • Mixed Textures: The hair in the crown of my head is so coarse and tight, unlike anywhere else and it's a bit more difficult to manage.
Outside of looking for some solutions I'll more than likely be getting another protective style soon.

Perhaps this is a phase that many of us experience in the natural hair journey? How did you deal? HELP!!!
